What is a Podiatrist?

A Podiatrist is a health professional who specializes in the assessment and treatment of lower limb and foot conditions.  Podiatrists are the only health care group who specialise in foot care. To practice podiatry requires extensive university training and registration. Dr Barbour attended the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine and received his doctorate in 1982.

What Do Podiatrists Do?

Podiatry is the dedicated study, diagnosis and treatment of a person’s foot, ankle and lower leg. Podiatrists care for people of all ages and apply non surgical and surgical treatment. Podiatrists specialise in the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of the lower limb. This can range from; sports injuries, orthotic (biomechanical) therapy to improve walking and running, diabetic complications, arthritic problems, general foot conditions, footwear advice as well as nail and skin surgery.

Sports Podiatry-  treatment of foot and ankle injuries

General Podiatry - Assessment of any foot or ankle condition

General foot care – including corns, callous and nail care.

Minor Surgery  – ingrown toenails and verruca (plantar warts)

Diabetic Foot Care – assessment and treatment of diabetic feet.

Childrens Feet – Assesment of feet– and advice regarding care

Major Surgery - surgical care of foot problems, including bunions, hammertoes, neuromas, soft tissue masses, and heel spurs
